New Delhi / Jamnagar, Gujarat – January 2025
Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has announced ambitious plans to develop a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure hub in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with completion targeted within 24 months. The project was unveiled by Akash Ambani, Director of Reliance Industries, during a special event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Jamnagar refinery — Reliance’s first and one of the world’s largest refining complexes.
Vision to Transform Jamnagar into a Global AI Leader
Speaking at the ceremony, Akash Ambani described the AI hub as a transformative initiative that will position Jamnagar as a leading global destination for next-generation AI technology. He said the infrastructure, already under development, aims not only to make the city a leader in AI but also to place it “among the top ranked in the world” in the new era of information technology.
“The AI infrastructure that we have started working on in Jamnagar will not only make Jamnagar a leader in AI infrastructure but will also place it in the top ranks globally… and we are committed to completing this in record time, true Jamnagar style, within 24 months,” Ambani stated, emphasising both speed and innovation.
Strategic Importance and Legacy
Jamnagar has long been core to Reliance’s industrial and technological journey. The Jamnagar refinery, commissioned on December 28, 1999, transformed what was once a remote region into a thriving industrial and energy hub — creating significant economic and employment opportunities in the region. Today, it remains one of the world’s largest refining complexes.
The push into AI reflects Reliance’s broader strategic pivot toward digital technologies, data infrastructure, and advanced computing, building on its strengths in telecom, retail and digital platforms. This new hub is expected to complement other initiatives such as AI-ready data centres, which are being developed to support high-performance computing and cloud services at scale.
National AI Ecosystem and Partnerships
The Jamnagar AI hub announcement comes at a time when India is actively seeking to expand its AI ecosystem. At the 48th RIL Annual General Meeting, Reliance Industries announced plans to create a dedicated AI subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence, and forge partnerships with global technology leaders like Google Cloud and Meta to accelerate AI adoption across sectors. These partnerships are expected to bring world-class compute expertise and AI tools to India, leveraging Google’s infrastructure and Meta’s open-source AI platforms.
Boosting Job Creation and Innovation
Industry analysts say the Jamnagar AI hub could create significant employment opportunities, particularly in high-tech fields such as AI research, data engineering, cloud computing, and digital services. The presence of advanced AI infrastructure in Gujarat could also attract startups, academic collaborations, and global technology firms looking to leverage India’s growing digital market.
Future Outlook
While specific details about the project’s size, investment, and exact technology deployments are still emerging, the initiative clearly signals Reliance’s commitment to making Jamnagar not just an industrial powerhouse — but also a technology and innovation hub. With strong backing from RIL leadership and strategic technology partnerships, the AI hub is poised to play a central role in India’s advance into the global digital economy.
